My Last Day – Jesus’ Crucifixion
It’s so unique that this animated short film unfolds what happens before and after Jesus’ crucifixion through the eyes of a thief. The thief tells us what’s going on during his last day, that is, he witnesses how Jesus is tortured and crucified. The thief will be crucified for robbery and murder, so he knows that he has sinned, which highlights that Jesus is innocent. Meanwhile, the thief sees the resistance of the scribes, Pharisees, soldiers and the masses to the Lord Jesus, and also sees the Lord Jesus’ attitude toward all these. Finally, the thief confirms that Jesus is the Lord, then he repents to Him sincerely, and his spirit is saved …
The short film really pains us and makes us think. Why were the scribes and Pharisees who were familiar with the Bible and desperately yearned for the coming of the Messiah unable to recognize that Jesus was the coming Messiah of the Bible prophecy? Besides, they constantly tempted and bitterly hated Jesus, even colluded with the Roman government and incited the masses to crucify Him, and committed a heinous crime. What did they do so?
Later I got the answer from a book: “Do you wish to know the root of why the Pharisees opposed Jesus? Do you wish to know the substance of the Pharisees? They were full of fantasies about the Messiah. What’s more, they believed only that the Messiah would come, yet did not seek the truth of life. And so, even today they still await the Messiah, for they have no knowledge of the way of life, and do not know what the way of truth is. How, say you, could such foolish, stubborn and ignorant people gain God’s blessing? How could they behold the Messiah? They opposed Jesus because they did not know the direction of the Holy Spirit’s work, because they did not know the way of truth spoken by Jesus, and, furthermore, because they did not understand the Messiah. And since they had never seen the Messiah, and had never been in the company of the Messiah, they made the mistake of paying empty tribute to the name of the Messiah while opposing the substance of the Messiah by any means. These Pharisees in substance were stubborn, arrogant, and did not obey the truth. The principle of their belief in God is: No matter how profound Your preaching, no matter how high Your authority, You are not Christ unless You are called the Messiah. Are these views not preposterous and ridiculous?”
This passage clearly reveals the source of the Pharisees’ resistance to Jesus. They just abided by the doctrine of the Bible rather than seeking the way of the truth preached by Jesus. They were not believing in God but the Bible and their notions. Once the Lord Jesus’ work and word were not in line with the Bible, they hated and resisted Him. This painful historical lesson warns Christians of today that as long as we believe in God, we should focus on seeking the current utterances of God, put aside our definitions and opinions, just as the Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). We have been watching and waiting for the second coming of the Lord Jesus, and many biblical prophecies about the second coming of the Lord Jesus have been fulfilled. So, can we learn lessons from the previous generations and humble ourselves to seek just like Peter, disciple of that time? Peter modestly listened to Jesus’ teachings and put them into practice, and still stayed true to his faith and never left Jesus while all people were resisting Him, and he became someone who was approved of by God in the end.
